Richard Murrell – Motivational Speaker
The Deanes staff and students welcomed Richard Murrell to the school who gave an inspirational speech to the students. Richard has over thirty years of experience in broadcasting and has been a Director for some of the BBC’s most prestigious programmes over the past decade. He was first captivated by hospital radio in Epping, Essex, and Radio Top Shop in London, and then joined BBC Radio as a sound engineer, mainly working on Radio 1 and Radio 2 programmes. From BBC Radio Drama, to taking responsibility for Multi-Track Music recording at BBC Maida Vale, as Studio Manager, he eventually ended up working for the News and Sport division as a Senior Studio Manager. Richard then joined BBC TV News, as a Studio Operator, where he gained a fundamental understanding of lighting and video operation, on his journey of training to become a Vision Mixer on a whole range of BBC News programme outputs. From being a Vision Mixer, Richard took the next step was into Directing – giving Richard the opportunity to lead programmes ranging from BBC World News, to ‘Breakfast With Frost’, the BBC1 National News and the ‘Sunday Politics’ programme.
The students found the whole event interesting and particularly enjoyed the opportunity to use the auto cue in the capacity of a news reader, and the clip about bullying in the 1980s.
“I found that the assembly he gave was very interesting and informative. I enjoyed it all and want to go into the film production. The assembly interesting and quite inspirational for someone who wants to work in broadcasting. It was mind opening. It was interesting to learn about broadcasting and journalism and what they do on a daily basis” Year 11 Students.
