Citizenship

Read Mark 1: 9-38 (Use a Bible or
www.biblegateway.com)
Think about it: Who is it about? What happens?
What does this show?
Write: Create a list or table of the events that
happen in this passage. For each one write an aspect of Christ that this shows. Use subject specific terminology – omnipotent, omniscient, authority over nature, divine love, healing, prayer etc.

Rewind: Look at verse 11 and verse 24. What is Jesus described as? Summarise why this is important in the Christian teachings. Refer to the teachings of original sin, incarnation and atonement in your answer.
Summarise: What does this section of Mark reveal about Jesus?
Extension: Which good news do you think Jesus is referring to in verse 15? What does this say about Jesus’ own beliefs?

Distortion

Take a look at the work of New York based photographer Suzanne Saroff.

In her images titled ‘Perspective’ Suzanne Saroff arranges everyday objects, such a vegetables and flowers, with glasses of water. This changes the perceptive and scale through distorting the image

Use your camera or phone to create a series of (20+) photographs of everyday objects distorted with containers of water.

Think about your background and experiment with using plain paper or fabric behind your composition for a more striking photograph. You could try different lighting by setting up inside / outside / using lamps / torches etc.

Experiment with composition by trying different arrangements and positions of objects and also using landscape & portrait format with your camera or phone.

Save all of your images and select the most successful Suzanne Saroff inspired photograph from your shoot. Write a paragraph about how you set it up and what has worked well.

Watch the Youtube clip by The Economist - “Why girls do better at school”.

Read the article and answer the questions that follow on slide 12.

Slide 13: Which of the changes above do you think best explains why boys are underachieving in education. Give plenty of explanation.

Music

Read through the Unit on Film Music from BBC Bitesize:  https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/guides/zwdhpv4/revision/1

Make sure you listen to all the clips, and watch the video with Michael Price.

Take notes on the content of the guide – defining key words – Ostinati, Leitmotif, Syncopation, Atonal.

Complete the test at the end of the guide.

In September, we will begin creating our own clips for a variety of film genres, then we will extend one of these into a full composition.

In preparation for this, during the summer holidays, please watch 4 (or more) films from different genres (action, thriller, western, romance, drama, sci-fi, fantasy, horror). https://www.tvguide.co.uk/ gives you listings for upcoming films each week, or if you have access to Netflix/Disney+/Amazon Prime, then use some age appropriate films on there.

While watching, please try to pay particular attention to the music – what instruments are being used? How has the composer made you feel? How have they achieved this? Does it feel as scary/tense/upsetting with the sound muted?

Getting a good idea of typical instruments will help you enormously when beginning this unit.

Enjoy! And any film recommendations – email them over to me!
