The Deanes as a Beacon School
The Deanes is delighted to announce that have been chosen as a Beacon school in Holocaust Education as part of the UCL Beacon School in Holocaust Education Programme.
The UCL Centre for Holocaust Education works with schools across the country in order to enable young people to deepen their understanding of the events of the Holocaust. We are very proud to be chosen for the programme as it helps Deanes’ students to explore the Holocaust and its relevance for their own lives and contemporary world.
Miss Ivan has the privilege to be the Lead Teacher in the programme. Her role involves coordinating the development of Holocaust education at the Deanes. As part of the programme Miss Ivan attended a 4-day residential seminar. On the seminar she had the opportunity to attend several workshops building on her knowledge and developing teaching and learning skills to share across the curriculum.
Within the Beacon Programme our students will take part in several opportunities to develop their ability to think independently and critically. Several learning activities and assemblies are being organised for January during the Holocaust Memorial Day. Other activities will be organised to raise awareness of genocides that are still happening in the world today.
The Deanes staff have also worked hard to establish a Beacon School local network. A whole day CPD event in Southend has been organised to promote cross-curricular approaches to teaching and learning. The network will allow colleagues from other schools to share ideas and experiences. This will enable a network of colleagues to work collaboratively to develop the teaching of the Holocaust.
The programme is ongoing, so look out for updates throughout the year on the Deanes website and on other social network sites.
