Content Area 1: Child Development | Students will be studying the expected patterns of a child’s development aged 0-5 years including physical development, communication and language development, social and emotional development and cognitive development. | Students will demonstrate secure knowledge of the content area and the ability to apply that to the externally set task. | Students will submit a written response which will demonstrate an understanding of holistic child development. This will be graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. |
Autumn |
Content Area 2: Factors that influence the child’s development | Students will study the factors that influence a child’s development being able to articulate the differences between biological factors and environmental factors (Nature verses Nurture). | Students will demonstrate secure knowledge of the content area and the ability to apply that to the externally set task. | Students will submit a written response which will demonstrate an understanding of factors that influence a child’s development. This will be graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. |
Spring |
Content Area 3: Care routines, play and activities to support the child. | Students will study basic care routines, basic care needs and play activities and apply them to a variety of individual needs. | Students will demonstrate secure knowledge of the content area and the ability to apply that to the externally set task. | Students will submit a written response which will demonstrate an understanding of care routines, play and activities to support the child’s development. This will be graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. |
Summer |
Content Area 4: Early Years Provisions

Students gain an understanding of the different types of Early Years Provision including statutory, private, independent, voluntary services. |
Students will demonstrate secure knowledge of the content area and the ability to apply that to the externally set task. |
Students will submit a written response which will demonstrate an understanding of the different types of Early Years Provision. This will be graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. |
Summer |
Content Area 5: Legislation, policies and procedures in the early years.

Students gain an understanding of regulatory authorities, pertinent legislation, policies and procedures and the role of an Early Years Practitioner in supporting and maintaining procedures |
Students will demonstrate secure knowledge of the content area and the ability to apply that to the externally set task.

Students will submit a written response which will demonstrate an understanding of legislation, policies and procedures in the early years and the expectations of the early years practitioner. This will be graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. |

Content Area 6: Expectation of the Early Years Worker

Students will learn how to behave as an Early Years worker. Students will understand professional boundaries and how to work within policies and procedures. |
Students will demonstrate secure knowledge of the content area and the ability to apply that to the externally set task. |
Students will submit a written response which will demonstrate an understanding the expectations of Early Years Worker. This will be graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. |
Summer |
Content Area 7: Roles and responsibilities.

Students will gain an understanding of partnership working, roles and responsibilities, working with external agencies and how they should work as part of a multi-disciplinary team. |

Students will submit a written response which will demonstrate an understanding the importance of observations in Early Years Childcare. This will be graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. |

Content Area 9: Planning in Early Year Childcare.

Students will learn about the importance of a child centred approach to development. |
Students will demonstrate secure knowledge of the content area and the ability to apply that to the externally set task. |
Students will submit a written response which will demonstrate an understanding of planning in Early Years Childcare. This will be graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction. |
Spring |
Externally Set Case Study Released – January (50% of final grade) Teacher Assessed, Externally Moderated. |
Students will complete the synoptic project focussing on their knowledge of a child’s development | Students will demonstrate analysis and evaluation of the externally set case study and plan their response which is comprehensive and highly relevant to the scenario. | Students will submit a completed project. This will contribute 50% to their overall qualification grade and draws on their knowledge and understanding from across the course. |
Summer |
Revision | Students will revise the content areas of study to ensure they are fully prepared for the examined assessment. A variety of assessment questions will be used. Real World case studies that are relevant to the sector will form the basis of this unit. |
Students will demonstrate secure knowledge of the content area and the ability to apply that to the externally set paper. |
