Unit 1: This unit introduces learners to the construction sector and the type of professional and trade roles and activity that is undertaken. The learner will explore the different types of buildings and structures that the built environment forms. Sustainability and the impact of the built environment on the local community is explored along with reduction measures that can be employed. |
1.8 Health and safety In this section learners will gain knowledge and understanding of health and safety in relation to: • Risks for employees, employers and the public during construction and the built environment projects • Following procedures and carrying out risk assessments • Relevant legislation, including Health and Safety at Work Act and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations • Using personal protective equipment (PPE) • Safely working with gas, water and electricity • working at height and in enclosed spaces. |
Learners should know and understand that construction sites are hazardous environments with many risks. Learners should know and understand the importance of following the correct procedures (rules) so that contractors and employees work safely and prevent accidents and injuries. Learners should know and understand that regulations require employers to protect the wellbeing of workers, visitors and members of the public, and control exposure to hazards in order to prevent illness or injury. |
This unit is externally assessed through a written examination available in January/February and May/June each year. Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes Number of marks: 80 Format: objective responses, short and extended answer questions based around applied situations. Learners may be required to use stimulus material to respond to questions. This assessment contributes 40% to the overall qualification grade. |

We will continue to look into health and safety in a construction environment. We will develop our knowledge in health and safety legal requirements for working in the construction industry. Understand risks to health and safety in different situations. Understand how to minimise risks to health and safety and Know how risks to security are minimised in construction | We will gain knowledge in the following areas. Identify safety signs used by the construction industry. Identify fire extinguishers used in different situations. Describe the role of the Health and Safety Executive. Identify hazards to health and safety in different situations. Describe potential effects of hazards in different situations. Explain the risk of harm in different situations. Explain existing health and safety control measures in different situations. Recommend health and safety control measures in different situations. Identify risks to security in construction in different situations. Describe measures used in construction to minimise risk to security. | Learners will know health and safety legal requirements for working in the construction industry . They will understand risks to health and safety in different situations, understand how to minimise risks to health and safety and know how risks to security are minimised in construction | This unit is externally assessed. The external assessment will be available in January the summer of each year. Grading: Level 1 Pass, Level 2 Pass, Level 2 Merit, Level 2 Distinction Format: On screen e-assessment. Short and extended answer questions based around applied situations. Learners will be required to use stimulus material to respond to questions. |

Unit 2 Practical construction skills relevant to tiling. Pupils will be undertaking a number theory and practical lessons that introduce them to tiling, the different techniques used and the tools and terms used in the building industry. |
Students will complete a series of small challenges that will build up a body of knowledge relating to tiling. This includes preparation, application and finishing. Pupils will learn how they should work professionally in industry and will learn how to do costings for jobs. | Pupils will be able to produce a tiled wall. Pupils will have the correct spacing between each of the tiles and have laid them in their desired pattern attractively. The tiles will be grouted and finished to a high standard. | This work is assessed against the WJEC Unit 2 grading criteria with pupils achieving a pass, merit or a distinction for the unit as a whole. Pupils will produce a range of techniques that are used fluently and consistently in completion of all three specified tasks. All outcomes are within specification tolerances. |

Unit 3 In this unit, learners are required to develop knowledge, skills and understanding in three areas • Brickwork • Decoration • Tiles
|
Learners will need to make use of their knowledge and understanding gained from Unit 1 throughout this unit, including: Professional and managerial roles & responsibilities associated with the built environment sector Building life cycle construction Disposal, reuse or recycling Waste disposal, re-use and recycling Trades, employment and careers Risks for employees, employers and the public during construction and the built environment projects Following procedures and carrying out risk assessments Using personal protective equipment (PPE). |
Pupils will be able to Interpret sources of information, Set success criteria, Prepare for construction tasks, Carry out the construction task safely, Remove and dispose of materials and Evaluate their own work and performance. | This unit is internally assessed through controlled assessment available in January and May each year. This assessment contributes 60% to the overall qualification grade. |

Unit 3 Planning construction projects In this unit pupils will learn about different types of jobs that exist in the construction sector and how these jobs contribute to successful projects. Pupils will develop an understanding of the processes that are followed by people working in construction that ensure projects are successful. Pupils will use the knowledge and understanding have acquired through carrying out practical construction tasks and consideration of safety and security of construction processes, together with planning skills developed through this unit, so that they can plan construction projects |
Know job roles involved in realising construction and built environment projects.Understand how built environment development projects are realised.Be able to plan built environment development projects. | Pupils will describe activities of those involved in construction projects. They will describe responsibilities of those involved in construction projects. Describe outputs of those involved in realising construction projects; Describe processes used in built environment development projects;Calculate resources to meet requirements for built environment development projects; Assess potential effect of factors on project success; Interpret sources of information; Sequence processes to be followed; Apportion time to processes and Set project tolerances. | This unit is externally assessed. The external assessment will be available in the summer of each year |
