Year 10 Curriculum plans

Autumn

An introduction to the Hair and Beauty industry.

Gain understanding of business ownerships, the relevant health and safety legislation, the relevant consumer protection legislation and the basic structure of the hair. Students will be able to answer questions about and show practical knowledge / best practice of health and safety in the industry. Students will partake in mini assessments throughout the term, assessing their knowledge through 3 starts each session revision questions.

Autumn

The practical techniques in hair trends, plaiting, setting, blow drying and curling.

Practical hair styling skills for professional services. They will be able to answer exam style questions confidentially. They will be able to explain and identify the different types of business ownerships, highlighting the pros and cons of them all.They will be able to answer exam style questions confidentially about consumer rights in the industry.Students will apply their practical skills in creating a variety of hair styling techniques and client requests. Students will develop their skills in observing others and providing constructive feedback. Students will actively partake in lessons and practice new skills on each other. Students will be able to have practical skills assessed and signed off their practical training plan / checklist when they achieve the standard expected of a junior stylist in industry.

Spring

An introduction to the hair & beauty industry.Hair and beauty science.The practical techniques in hair trends, plaiting, setting, blow drying and curling.The practical techniques and trends in skin care, manicure and make-up.

Gain understanding of the hair and skin.Gain an understanding of hair and beauty products and services.Practical hair styling skills for professional services.Practical beauty skills for professional services. Students will be able to answer questions about and show practical knowledge / best practice of health and safety in the industry.They will be able to answer exam style questions confidentially. They will be able to explain and identify the different types of business ownerships, highlighting the pros and cons of them all.Students will apply their practical skills in creating a variety of hair styling techniques, beauty services and client requests. Students will develop their skills in observing others and providing constructive feedback. Students will actively partake in lessons and practice new skills on each other. Summer

Unit UV21578- Students will continue to develop their knowledge in the hair & beauty industry and prepare for their summer exam.  Unit UV21582- Students will continue to develop their knowledge in hair and beauty science and complete their first assignment brief. 

Students will gain an understanding for types of beauty businesses and how the beauty sector has an impact on the UK economy. Students will learn about careers within the sector and employment information. They will gain an understanding of the profession and the characteristics needed to be a successful professional.  Students will continue to develop their skills in practical hair styling skills and beauty skills for professional services. Some of the practical techniques they will be covering are hair trends, plaiting, setting, blow drying and curling. The practical techniques and trends in skin care, manicure and make-up.  Students will gain an understanding of the hair and skin and of hair and beauty products and services. They will know what ingredients are in the products and evaluate the positive and negative effects. Students will be able to discuss the basic skin structure and different types of skin and hair. They will be able to discuss how external factors affect the skin.  Students will be able to answer questions about and show practical knowledge / best practice of health and safety in the industry.  They will be able to answer exam style questions confidentially. They will be able to explain and identify the different types of business ownerships, highlighting the pros and cons of them all.  Students will be able to respond confidently to the assignment brief and describing and discussing all the necessary points about hair and beauty science.  Students will apply their practical skills in creating a variety of hair styling techniques, beauty services and client requests. Students will develop their skills in observing others and providing constructive feedback. Students will actively partake in lessons and practice new skills on each other.  Students' knowledge of hair & beauty in industry will be assessed in their summer exam which is worth 25% of the overall qualification.    Students will be assessed on their knowledge in hair and beauty science with the completion of their portfolio of work. This assignment is worth 25% of the overall qualification.     Students will be able to have practical skills assessed and signed off their practical training plan / checklist when they achieve the standard expected of a junior stylist or junior beauty therapist in industry.

An introduction to the hair & beauty industry, exam revision.Completing a hair and beauty research project.The practical techniques in hair trends, plaiting, setting, blow drying and curling.

Gain understanding of business ownerships, the relevant health and safety legislation, the relevant consumer protection legislation.Gain an understanding of carrying out research, methods, purpose, SMARTS and outcomes. Practical hair styling skills for professional services. Students will be able to answer questions about and show practical knowledge / best practice of health and safety in the industry.They will be able to answer exam style questions confidentially for unit UV21578 Students will apply their practical skills in creating a variety of hair styling techniques and client requests. Students will develop their skills in observing others and providing constructive feedback. Students will actively partake in lessons and practice new skills on each other. Students will partake in mini assessments throughout the term, assessing their knowledge through 3 start each session revision questions.Students will be able to have practical skills assessed and signed off their practical training plan / checklist when they achieve the standard expected of a junior stylist in industry.

Spring

Unit 21583 – Responding to a hair and beauty design brief.

Students will gain an understanding of how to analyse different types of hair and beauty briefs, how to source information and develop design ideas. Students will learn how to develop themes and ideas and present design ideas.  Students will be able to respond to their assignment confidently and creatively, completing a portfolio of work that demonstrates their clear understanding of the content.  Students will be assessed on their knowledge of responding to a hair and beauty design brief with the completion of their portfolio work. This assignment is worth 25% of the overall qualification.
